Even When You're on Holiday, Marketing Finds a Way

helen • July 23, 2026

Every now and then, it's important to step away from work, recharge the batteries and take in some new surroundings. That's exactly what we did recently with a break to the beautiful shores of Lake Garda in Italy.

Like many business owners, switching off completely doesn't come naturally. While I wasn't checking emails or planning marketing campaigns, the marketer in me never really goes on holiday.

I'd love to tell you that I returned with pages of groundbreaking marketing inspiration... but the truth is, sometimes the best thing you can do is simply enjoy being somewhere different.

That said, I couldn't help noticing a few things along the way.

Football, Fans and a Power Cut

Our holiday coincided with the FIFA Club World Cup. Even though Italy wasn't involved, some bars and restaurants were catering for visiting fans, creating a great atmosphere around the matches.

I also found myself keeping an eye on the marketing campaigns and social media activity back in the UK. It was interesting to see how different brands embraced the tournament, finding creative ways to join the conversation and capture people's attention.

Unfortunately, our plans to watch one of England's matches didn't quite go to plan. A hotel power cut meant there was no television and no football. Whether it was unfortunate timing or perfectly timed, depending on your view of England's performance, I'll let you decide!

Thankfully, we did manage to watch the England v Argentina game later in the trip... although perhaps a power cut on that occasion might not have been the worst thing!

Limone – A Place That Knows Its Brand

Of all the places we visited; Malcesine, Riva del Garda and Limone sul Garda, Limone was probably my favourite.

If you've been, you'll know exactly what I mean. If you haven't, it's one of those places that instantly feels distinctive.

Its lemon heritage isn't just something mentioned in a guidebook; it's woven into almost every aspect of the town. Lemons feature in shop displays, restaurant décor, menus, souvenirs, artwork, signage and even the streetscape.

Rather than feeling overdone, it creates a consistent identity that makes the town memorable.

It's a wonderful example of place branding done well.

Every touchpoint reinforces the same story, giving visitors a clear sense of what makes Limone unique. That's exactly what good branding should do for any business. You don't need to be the biggest or the loudest; you just need to be clear about what makes you different and consistently communicate it.

Sometimes Inspiration Comes from Looking Up

Marketing inspiration doesn't always come from conferences, webinars or industry reports. Sometimes it comes from wandering through unfamiliar streets, sitting in a café watching the world go by, or noticing how local businesses create memorable experiences for visitors.

More importantly, taking time away creates the headspace to think differently. It's amazing how often ideas appear when you're not actively searching for them.

So, while I didn't return with a notebook full of revolutionary marketing strategies, I did come back refreshed, re-energised and reminded that the strongest brands often succeed because they stay true to who they are and tell their story consistently.

Now it's time to unpack the suitcase, swap gelato for Yorkshire tea, and get back to helping businesses tell their own stories.

Ciao, Lake Garda – until next time.
