Not using Social Media?

There was a surge, not that long ago when businesses felt they needed to have a Facebook / Twitter / Pinterest (delete as appropriate) presence and rushed to open an account and then Posted / Tweeted / Pinned (delete as appropriate) for a few days / weeks / months (delete.. you know what to do!) and then nothing.

These sad lonely accounts now lay dormant, dusty and abandoned.. what message do you think they portray to your customers or potential customers?

  1. The business has closed
  2. The person who set it up has left – were they made redundant or did they get a better job?
  3. They don’t care / can't be bothered to keep it updated

Not using social media? In reality, the truth is probably that you are just too busy to focus on social media or maybe it was deemed an unnecessary drain on resources because it didn’t bring initial results.

Whatever the reason, you may want to consider reviewing the objectives for opening the account in the first instance i.e. brand awareness, interaction with customers / market place, promotion of a particular product / service / event.

Are these objectives still valid?

  • No - Then close these accounts, and don’t forget to remove links from other social media tools or your website. This isn’t a failure, just the realisation that this marketing activity did not work for your business; other methods are available which may be better suited.
  • Yes - Are you using the right social media tool for that need? Focus on one properly rather than trying to manage two or three badly.
  • Do you have the resources in-house to help you meet that need?
  • Have you included social media in your marketing strategy, who is going to manage the account and what are you going to say?
